Anthracite, also known as hard coal and black coal, is a hard, compact variety of coal that is the highest rank coal. It contains more fixed carbon (86 percent or greater on a dry, ash-free basis) than any other form of coal and the least amount of volatile matter. Due to the lack of volatiles, it can only be burned in special boilers.
